Application of wireless technologies to forward predict crop yields in the poultry production chain CIGR Journal
Jackman, Patrick; Ward, Shane; Brennan, Liam; Corkery, Gerard; McCarthy, Ultan.
Average bird weight is the primary measure of crop yield and is the basis for calculating payment for the grower by the wholesaler. Furthermore the profit per bird is very small. Thus very tight control of growing process is essential to ensure average bird weight is maximised. The important factors (air temperature, air humidity, Carbon Dioxide concentration and Ammonia concentration) that affect the intake of feed and water must be kept at their optimum during the progress of the growing cycle. These factors can be influenced by activating burners and opening the vents on walls of the growing house. It then follows that the burning and venting strategy will be influential on the average bird weight of the crop. Currently the burning and venting strategy...

Minimizing flight time and fuel consumption for airborne crop spraying CIGR Journal
Kamal, Syed Shariq; Jackman, Patrick; Grieve, Bruce.
Abstract: With the world’s growing population and increase in urbanization, the requirement for optimized agriculture has increased.  Agricultural operations such as crop spraying and water management require rigorous monitoring of crops in order to identify the correct time to spray and irrigate the crops.  Thus managing vast properties require an affordable spraying strategy.  Advancement in computer processing speed and algorithms has made it possible to devise such strategies to optimize several agricultural operations.  One of those operations is to spray crops with pesticides and monitor crops.  This requires an airborne vehicle which can monitor and spray crops efficiently.  Several optimization techniques have been used in recent years to optimize...

Processing online crop disease warning information via sensor networks using ISA ontologies CIGR Journal
Jackman, Patrick; Gray, Alasdair J. G.; Brass, Andrew; Stevens, Robert; Shi, Ming; Scuffell, Derek; Hammersley, Simon; Grieve, Bruce.
Growing demand for food is driving the need for higher crop yields globally.  Correctly anticipating the onset of damaging crop diseases is essential to achieve this goal.  Considerable efforts have been made recently to develop early warning systems.  However, these methods lack a direct and online measurement of the spores that attack crops.  A novel disease information network has been implemented and deployed.  Spore sensors have been developed and deployed.  The measurements from these sensors are combined with similar measurements of important local weather readings to generate estimates of crop disease risk.  It is combined with other crop disease information allowing overall local disease risk assessments and forecasts to be made.  The resulting...

The Role of Information and Communication Technology in Poultry Broiler Production Process Control CIGR Journal
Jackman, Patrick; Penya, Hector; Ross, Robert.
Broiler production is arguably one of the most challenging food supply industries in the world due to the large number of animals that are reared on a given site, and the competitive nature of the sector. These factors taken together mean that every opportunity to optimise the production process must be considered to boost bird weight gain while at the same time reducing resource investment and risk of major incidents. As a result of this, the last decade has seen the introduction of Precision Livestock Farming techniques to the broiler production industry. In this paper we review the emergence and trends in Precision Livestock Farming in the broiler production industry by examining both in-market and laboratory based advances for this sector. The review...
